After the voters, the vultures
Article Abstract:
It is quite likely that the UK Conservative party will elect a new leader at some point in 1997, and potential candidates for the leadership have already started jostling for position. Experts believe that the centre of gravity in the Conservative party will shift sharply towards the Europhobic right wing after the forthcoming general election, but there are also indications that the left and centre will remain a force in the party after the general election. Possible candidates include Michael Heseltine, Michael Portillo, Michael Howard and Stephen Dorrell.

Michael Howard, leadership contender
Article Abstract:
Home secretary Michael Howard believes that he has a very good chance of succeeding John Major as leader of the UK Conservative party in the leadership battle which could follow the party's predicted defeat in a 1997 general election. Many observers do not believe that he could become party leader, especially as he has a very negative image. However, it is also possible to argue in his favour, particularly as the party moves increasingly towards the right wing.
