All bets are off for Canada's Hong Kong Chinese
Article Abstract:
The large influx of wealthy emigres from Hong Kong seems to have given a further boost to the already apparently thriving community of around 250,000 ethnic Chinese in Vancouver, BC. Considerable business activity has developed around the Chinese community, and there were a number of Chinese-Canadian candidates in the national election which took place on Jun 2, 1997. However, Chinese-speakers are finding it difficult to make a living in a weak employment market, and it is reported that many are returning to Hong Kong.

Angel with a dirty face
Article Abstract:
The film 'The People vs Larry Flynt,' which tells the real story of the publisher of Hustler, a pornographic magazine, has attracted mixed reactions. The director of the film, Milos Forman, and producer Oliver Stone, acknowledge that Larry Flynt is not a pleasant character, but believe that the film shows him in a positive light in the end. The film's critics believe that it accords too much respect to a man who has been one of the worst pornographers ever in the US.
