Americans play chicken with food hygiene rules
Article Abstract:
Hygiene standards in US poultry and meat export abattoirs fall well below those which exist in the European Union, according to an investigation by European veterinary experts. This has prompted the European Union to threaten to introduce a complete ban on imports of chicken from the US. At present, products from the US are widely used in inexpensive chicken products. The US claims that the European Union has exaggerated hygiene problems in order to have an excuse to ban imports of US meats.

Zagreb likely to be winner under US peace plan
Article Abstract:
The US has put forward a peace plan for the former Yugoslavia which aims to take account of the extensive population shifts which have taken place during four years of war. The new peace map divides the former Yugoslavia into new ethnically pure territories, and is therefore likely to attract criticism for encouraging ethnic cleansing. If the plan is accepted, Croatia will be the main beneficiary, receiving Krajina and Serb-held East Slavonia.

Settlements mushroom despite Rabin's pledge
Article Abstract:
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's policy of forbidding Israeli building in occupied territories is ignored as Jewish settlements grow. US commercial loan guarantees could be stopped if building is not confined to unoccupied land. Rabin permitted the completion of 11,000 buildings which were begun under the previous government. These could house a further 60,000 Jews to add to the 110,000 in the West Bank and Gaza.
