An easy way to make the grade?
Article Abstract:
The growing popularity of the new modular A-level examination, in which students study for individual blocks and take examinations at various stages during the two-year course, has fuelled the debate about whether A-level standards are rising or falling. It appears that students opting for modular A-levels achieve better grades than those who take traditional courses. Some observers claim that this is because these new courses are easier, while others believe that it is because the students are able to work towards more realistic targets.

So what are little boys made of?
Article Abstract:
The Australian writer and psychologist, Steve Biddulph, who travels internationally giving lectures on raising sons, believes that there is reason to worry about them. Press coverage gives the impression that boys are difficult, but they are different to girls, rather than difficult, according to Biddulph, who believes that having a male role model is important. Boyish behaviour, which includes more physical action, needs to be better understood.

The strange case of the disappearing parents
Article Abstract:
Many parents help out at their child's primary school, but this is much less common once the child enters secondary education. Secondary schools teachers can sometimes be less welcoming of parental assistance, while the children tend to feel embarrassed about having their parent present. However, educationalists, schools and parents are now starting to acknowledge the importance of maintaining the school-home partnership at secondary level.
