An escape from the prison mentality
Article Abstract:
Experts in the US are beginning to realise that building more prisons does not serve to reduce the crime rate. There are now five times more people in prison in the US than there were in 1970, but the crime rate continued to rise rapidly until the early 1990s. Close analysis has shown that there is no local link between the amount of crime and the rapid expansion in prison capacity. It is now time for such research to be taken into consideration in the UK, where the prison population recently reached a record 54,994.

'The cost to society is so great it makes me dizzy.'(case of United Kingdom student in prison for possessing Ecstasy and cannabis)(Column)
Article Abstract:
James Humphreys is a United Kingdom stident who was imprisoned for possessing Ecstasy and cannabis. He will be able to return to Manchester University, and has retained a sense of humor, but imprisoning people for minor drug offenses like his is a waste of public funds. Around 48,000 pounds sterling has been wasted on his case. Investment in treatment helps reduce the cost of crime, yet the large UK prison population includes many drug offenders who are never offered treatment.
