An everyday story of not-so-friendly country folk
Article Abstract:
Residents of Muchelney, Somerset, England, objected to council plans to house a Romany family there. The Pikes have lived on three council estates since they left their gypsy camp in 1985 to give their five children under 15 a settled life. Neighbours in the Stoodham estate, South Petherton, complained about them, alleging theft and vandalism. The community services department of the South Somerset District Council sought a rural property for them, but local people blocked the entrance with muckspreaders and flooded the building.

Editor ready to close a chapter on Old Lady of Skipton
Article Abstract:
Editor of the Craven Herald and Pioneer, Skipton, Yorkshire, England, Jack Heald retires in March 1993 after 43 years on the paper. He is famous for his tolerant and humourous weekly leaders. He believes in good manners, capital punishment and national service. The paper reflects its readership of 19,500, which is slow to change. The paper still prints advertisements on the front page and local news at the back. Westminster Press acquired the Herald in 1988 and computerised it but did not interfere editorially.

Harmony on the eco farm with a doctor animals can count on
Article Abstract:
Dr Marthe Kiley-Worthington is an animal psychiatrist who is experimenting with equine behaviour on her 80-acre farm in Throwleigh, Devon. She believes animals are more intelligent than previously thought. She is researching animal cognition at Exeter University and works with horses who bite or kick. Her theory is that horses become attached to people and work to please them. Traditional horse management methods are not the best way to deal with horses.
