An island where the millionaires outnumber the jobless
Article Abstract:
Agriculture and tourism were once the driving forces behind economic prosperity on the island of Jersey. However, the island's main source of income is now the almost 100 billion pounds sterling invested in trusts there. The island has 78 offshore banks, attracted by tax deals where non-residents are not liable for income tax on savings. Some observers are now questioning the status of Jersey's financial services industry, which is taking employees away from agriculture and tourism.
