An open invitation to the spirit
Article Abstract:
Clarence Fountain started his band at the Talladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind as the Happyland Singers. Their name was changed to the Five Blind Boys of Alabama in 1948 to develop friendly rivalry with the Blind Boys of Mississippi, led by Archie Brownlee. Harmony singing and testifying was popular until televangelists began and gospel became a fringe musical style. A gospel setting of Sophocles' 'Oedipus', 'The Gospel at Colonnus' by Lee Breuer in 1980 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music was successful and publicised the band. Fountain prefers performing in churches to clubs and does not believe in transferring to secular soul.

Pop and the art of bad behaviour
Article Abstract:
There is a long tradition of pop stars behaving badly, and their behaviour now has to be particularly outrageous before it really attracts attention. Very little shocks the media and the general public in the 1990s, although some extreme cases have been headline news. These include those of Shaun Ryder and Courtney Love.
