Eastern Europe has cheap labour, enabling it to produce wine for supermarket prices. Bulgaria began campaigning in the UK in the 1970s and is sixth in the import table. Hungary subsidised the export of its wine by 30%. Some of the good wines are from wineries run by new world winemakers or by good local people.

Article Abstract:
Red wines from New Zealand are more successful since classic French grapes were grown and modern scientific techniques were applied to vineyard husbandry. Canopy management gives riper fruit. Malolactic fermentation, noble rot and new oak add to the character of chardonnays.
