Art that gave the penny black a red face
Article Abstract:
Artist William Mulready's illustrated envelope in 1840 commenced the trend for illustrated envelopes in the UK until the invention of the picture postcard at the end of the 19th century. Mulready's illustration was in ink and was commissioned by Rowland Hill for a pre-paid envelope released on May 6, 1840. It was badly received and many caricatures of the envelope were produced. Such envelopes are collectors' items. It is estimated that 2 envelopes illustrated by Mulready will fetch about 1,500 pounds sterling each at a Christie's auction in Feb 1992.

A new deal for ceramics
Article Abstract:
The opening of the Barrett Marsden Gallery in Islington, London, England, in Mar 1998 is likely to have a significant impact on the UK market for contemporary ceramics. At present, it is very rare for contemporary ceramics to sell for more than 3,000 pounds sterling. The market has been dominated by auction house Bonhams, where private collectors often outbid dealers. The new gallery has reached exclusivity deals with 13 artists, many of whom are members of the charitable crafts organization Contemporary Applied Arts.

Put your penny in the slot
Article Abstract:
The majority of the vending machines which were so common during the second world war were scrapped in the 1950s, and few now survive. There is probably only one private collection in the UK, and the only others are in transport museums. However, collectors could start emerging with the publication of the first British collectors' guide to vending machines.
