As Tory MPs toast their future leader, out in the shires the party is quietly withering away
Article Abstract:
The recent general election defeat of the UK Conservative party has come as a great blow to the party's activists and long-standing supporters. There are very mixed views about who should be the party's next leader, as well as about whether ordinary party members should be allowed to participate in electing the leader. Officials at Conservative Central Office are keen to stress the need to look to a positive future, but the party as a whole is suffering falling membership and poor morale.

Portillo calls for a caring Thatcherism
Article Abstract:
It is now time for the UK Conservative party to return to its roots, according to former Conservative MP Michael Portillo. He was very disappointed to find, when making a three-part television series examining the causes of the party's defeat in the May 1997 general election, that the party still has a negative image. He feels that the party must now focus on changing its image, presenting itself as sympathetic, reasonable and unified.

The Tories will not get elected until they get in tune with the electorate
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party must show courage and be radical as it seeks to improve its image among ordinary voters. Areas that need to be addressed include relations with ethnic minorities and attitudes towards homosexuality.
