Ashworth: Hospital dogged by controversy
Article Abstract:
There has been controversy for some time surrounding Ashworth top-security hospital near Maghull, England. This establishment houses some of the most dangerous mentally disturbed criminals in the country, and was the subject of an inquiry in 1992, when evidence of systematic bullying and abuse of patients was revealed. A later report indicated high levels of drug-taking and organised crime, and it was claimed during a court case in Oct 1996 that staff had received payment for smuggling in prostitutes, alcohol and drugs. The hospital is now at the centre of paedophilia allegations.

The tiny lapwing takes on the mighty developer
Article Abstract:
The neglect of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in the UK is presenting a threat to the continued survival of a number of different bird species, according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Such sites include Rainham Marsh, in east London, England. This seems to be little more than wasteland, and has been affected by pollution. However, it has the potential to be a key breeding ground for lapwings and other wading birds, according to the Environment Agency.

'People think avalanches only happen in places like the Alps. But last year we had more deaths by avalanches here than in Canada.' (high risk of avalanches in Scotland)
Article Abstract:
There is a high risk of avalanches in Scotland during extreme weather conditions, according to the Scottish Avalanche Information Service. Indeed, there were more deaths by avalanches in Scotland in 1995 than in Canada. There has been a rise in fatalities over recent years as more and more people have become involved in mountaineering, but new technology is making it easier to find people who have been buried by an avalanche.
