Article Abstract:
The film 'The Full Monty' is a working-class film which aims to bring an element of hope to the lives of ordinary people, according to Peter Cattaneo, the film's director. He believes that reality is subjective, and felt it was important to include aspirations and dreams in the film, rather than focusing exclusively on the negative aspects of working-class life. The film's main theme is gender, rather than unemployment or poverty. Its male characters exist in an isolated world of their own, divorced from the reality of their working wives.

Chasing a dream in his own back yard
Article Abstract:
Film director Kevin Smith feels that people are judging him when they watch his films. He has found it hard to work with Hollywood film studios, and prefers to work independently in his home region of New Jersey. His low-budget film 'Chasing Amy,' which portrays a love triangle between a lesbian woman and two men, has been one of the most successful independent films of 1997 in the US. This film expresses views very close to Smith's own heart, and he feels that to a certain extent it called into question his own sexual identity.

The road to Palookaville
Article Abstract:
Film-maker Alan Taylor believes that he has a world view which is very much in line with that of Italo Calvino, whose 1940s short stories were one of the influences behind Taylor's debut film 'Palookaville.' Calvino's world-view remains within the realms of realism, and shows moments of hope in a desolate landscape. Taylor has a lot in common with Quentin Tarantino, but this view also puts him at odds with Tarantino. He is now keen to make a mainstream film, and would be willing to make compromises in order to do so.
