At last, the truth emerges about Gordon Lonsdale's shadowy life
Article Abstract:
It is possible that the KGB killed Soviet spy Konon Molodiy after he was released from the UK as a spy swap, according to Trofim Molodiy, his son. He believes that his mother had no idea what his father really did. His father was actually spying in the UK, where he was known as Gordon Lonsdale. He was sentenced to 25 years' jail in 1961, but was swapped in 1964 in Berlin, Germany, for British businessman Grenville Wynne. His son also accepts that it is possible that he died merely because he suffered from high blood pressure.

End of the road for Russia's party of war
Article Abstract:
Considerable influence was believed to have been exerted over Russian president Boris Yeltsin by secret policeman Mikhail Barsukov, bodyguard Alexander Korzhakov and defence industry bureaucrat Oleg Soskovets, all of whom have now been dismissed. They were behind Yeltsin's decision to send troops to Chechnya in Dec 1994, and have influenced him in many other ways. Their presence close to the president was causing reformers to despair about the future of democracy in Russia.

Faith survives Stalin's ravages
Article Abstract:
Many Jews emigrated from the former Soviet Union to Israel during the Communist era, but the around 1.5 million who remain in the region are now enjoying greater freedom. A few Jewish emigres have returned to Russia, and some are now engaged in social work. Jews are now allowed to express their religious beliefs, and those who are still leaving Russia are doing so for economic, rather than religious, reasons.
