C list makes the A grade
Article Abstract:
The Canadian equity market, which is made up of 3,400 companies, has risen by 25% since the beginning of 1996. It is set to continue to expanding if world economic prospects remain positive. In Chile, the economy is very strong, and early investors made large gains as a result of a free-market policy and the selling off of state concerns at below market value. Investment in China is less secure, although prospects will improve if the government decides to amalgamate 'A' and 'B' shares.

Nasty, brutish and short
Article Abstract:
The world hedge fund industry is worth $80 billion, and hedge funds have become firmly established in the US. However, they are still regarded with considerable suspicion in the UK. Hedge funds are not permitted to advertise, and this gives them a rather shady image. They are not regulated, thus increasing the risk for investors. Manager can sell shares which the fund does not own, unlike other pooled investment vehicles. This allows funds to make money in a falling market.

Goodbye to all that paper
Article Abstract:
UK stockbrokers advise shareholders not to panic as a result of the launch of Crest, the electronic share settlement system operated by the Bank of England's CrestCo, on July 15 1996. The system will not have a lot of impact on how share transactions take place for most shareholders in the short term. Shareholders will be able to choose whether they keep hold of their current share certificates, hold them in a nominee account, or become sponsored members of Crest.
