Fear stalks the Fatherland
Article Abstract:
Economic globalization is threatening to destroy the protected, comfortable lifestyle that Germans have enjoyed since the late 1940s. It is becoming clear that jobs and capital can be shifted out of Germany, and it seems that the post-war era may now be coming to an end. Many observers believe that Germany's generous pensions, health care and welfare benefits are no longer sustainable, but trade unions are still seeking a reduction in the working week. Other countries are now achieving stronger economic performance than Germany, where the unemployment rate is at almost 12%.

A cross they must continue to bear - whatever the critics say
Article Abstract:
The Red Cross is to consider at a meeting in Seville, Spain, in Nov 1997 whether in certain circumstances to use an emblem other than the red cross and red crescent. The cross would still be used by national Red Cross organizations in their own countries and for fundraising. However, a new logo would be used in war zones, where the red cross tends to be closely associated with religion, sometimes with negative consequences for its employees. There will inevitably be considerable resistance to change.
