At war over the law
Article Abstract:
Home secretary Michael Howard is clashing bitterly with Lord Chief Justice Lord Taylor over approaches to the formulation of legislation and the administration of justice in the UK. Many senior members of the judiciary now believe that the government is making arbitrary changes to legislation and is hampering the administration of justice. In contrast, ministers are accusing judges of being too lenient in their sentencing, thus going against the battle to reduce crime levels.

Freemasons' role deepens political divide
Article Abstract:
There is considerable concern about the influence of Freemasonry over local politics on the Isle of Wight, and the issue is now being investigated by the Local Government Ombudsman. It is claimed that there was Masonic interference with planning decisions on one of the island's three local councils, which became a unitary authority on Apr 01, 1995. It is also said that 12 of the 18 ruling Conservative group on Medina council, one of the local councils, were Masons.
