Audio-visual retailing
Article Abstract:
UK sales of audio-visual (AV) goods grew throughout the 1990s. The electrical goods sector as a whole grew by 43.9% in the five years to 1998, but this growth dropped back to 4.4% in 1998. However, 17.4% of households bought a television set in 1998. Demographic and social trends have stimulated demand for AV equipment and particularly for television sets. The growth of equipment to receive satellite television broadcasts is also significant. Independent retailers continue to be important but there are three major multiples. Dixons has the biggest market share at 15.7%.

Jewellery and watches retailing
Article Abstract:
A review of the UK jewellery and watches market reveals that, whilst sales of fashion jewellery and watches increased by 20% and 23% respectively between 1993 and 1997, the precious jewellery market has been depressed. Influences in the market include the increasing number of working women, demographic trends concerning the number of young people, and social trends concerning marriage. The market continues to be strongly seasonal. Home shopping and grocery superstore retailing will become more important in the watch and jewellery market.
