Avenue with a view to surprise
Article Abstract:
There are a considerable number of gardens in the UK which will be open to the public during the Easter period in 1997. The National Trust opens all its gardens at Easter, whether Easter is early or late, but some private gardens will not be opening under the National Gardens Scheme at Easter 1997, as the early Easter has meant that many flowers are not yet in bloom. At all gardens, a great deal of work will have been undertaken during the winter. Gardens worth visiting include Biddulph Grange in Staffordshire and Beverston Castle near Tetbury, England.

There are a number of places in the UK which are particularly worth visiting in autumn, as they have trees with very attractive autumn colour. Tree conditions change daily, according to weather conditions, so local advice should be taken. Places of particular interest include Westonbirt Arboretum in Tetbury, England, Whinlatter Forest Park near Hawkshead, England, Hamsterly Forest near Bishop Auckland, England, Attingham Park in Shrewsbury, England, and Ickworth Park and Garden near Bury St Edmunds, England.

Arcadia becomes a car park
Article Abstract:
Purbeck House in Swanage, England, was constructed by stonemason and quarryman George Burt. The house, now a hotel, has an extremely interesting garden. It has solid boundaries, and contains Irish yews and a very large ash. There is a small octagonal summerhouse with a scalloped lead roof. The Sunshine Walk leads to a water tank connected to a second summerhouse on a mound, where the visitor gains spectacular views across the bay.
