Bad conditions may ground BA's US deal
Article Abstract:
The planned alliance between British Airways (BA) and American Airlines (AA) has now gained regulatory approval. However, it is possible that BA will decide to postpone the deal in order to ensure that Heathrow airport is not opened up to competing carriers at the very time when the world airline market is about to enter a period of decline. Heathrow is vital to BA's profitability, with the 267 Heathrow slots the European Commission wants BA to surrender in return for allowing the alliance with AA to go ahead being worth possibly 500 million pounds sterling.
