Blair condemns 'historic' CAP reform as farmers celebrate
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair believes that the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) negotiated by Agriculture Minister Nick Brown does not go far enough. He feels that the UK should continue to seek deeper cuts in the cost of the CAP. The new CAP deal, which must be agreed by heads of government at a summit in Berlin, Germany, on Mar 25, 1999, will involve the guaranteed price of beef and cereals being reduced by a maximum of 20%, while the guaranteed price of milk will be cut by 15%. Farmers have welcomed the fact that these cuts are not more severe.
