Bad news for torturers
Article Abstract:
The law lords have ruled that former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet does not have immunity from prosecution. This ruling paves the way for Pinochet to be extradited from the UK to stand trial in Spain, even though the Spanish prosecution will only be able to bring three charges, as the 'double criminality' rule restricts extradition crimes to those taking place after 1988. The Pinochet case can be seen as marking a significant development in international human rights law.

Should doctors sack their patients?
Article Abstract:
Most GPs believe that they should have the right to remove a patient from their list if their relationship with that patient has broken down. However, there is now growing concern about the increasingly common practice of GPs refusing to treat patients who create too much work or who are very expensive to treat. This is the result of the NHS reforms of 1990, which have made patients into commodities and taken GPs into a frequently hostile marketplace.
