Uncomfortable questions must be faced
Article Abstract:
John Major achieved a clear victory in the ballot for the leadership of the Conservative party, but this is unlikely to encourage him to change his style of leadership. He is still likely to be a listening leader, keen to unite a range of different views. He must now act confidently, appointing new cabinet ministers to lead the party beyond the next general election. However, some observers believe that the party will remain divided over the European Union, and there will certainly be many difficult issues to address.

A white-knucke ride I cannot join
Article Abstract:
The Conservative party is becoming more divided than ever as John Redwood's supporters try to gain the backing of as many MPs as possible, even those with whom they would not normally associate. However, most MPs do not hold views which are as extreme as those of John Redwood, and do not believe that he would ever be able to unite the party. Like most ordinary people, they are simply rather cautious about Europe, not completely opposed to it.

So, how can the Tories win back the centre?
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party has clearly won the battle of ideas over recent years, as reflected by the fact that it has remained in office for a very long time. In order to ensure that it remains in power, it must emphasise that its policies are responsible for the current success of the UK economy. The Labour party's economic policies would return the economy to stagnation, and would bring high taxes and high unemployment.
