Bertram E. Smythies
Article Abstract:
Forester and ornithologist Bertram Smythies spent his early years in the traditions of the forest service in India. He studied Forestry at Balliol, Oxford, England, and then joined the Burma Forest Service in Nov 1934. He was posted to the forest service of Sarawak in 1949, and in 1957 produced the 'Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Borneo.' He spent some time on secondment to Brunei in the 1950s, but then returned to Sarawak as Conservator of Forests.

Eric Austen
Article Abstract:
Teacher and designer Eric Austen came from a humble background, but gained a scholarship to the City of Norwich Grammar School. He worked in the forestry service during the second world war, and then became a primary school teacher. He was a registered student at London University's Institute of Education from 1963 to 1972, and from 1964 to 1972 taught at Southlands College. He then moved to Goldsmith's as a lecturer, specializing in art education.

Ronald Brand
Article Abstract:
Teacher and youth leader Ronald Brand was greatly influenced by his childhood experiences in the Order of Woodcraft Chivalry. He became a laboratory technician at Guy's Hospital in London, England, on leaving school, but later became a teacher at the Order of Woodcraft Chivalry's Forest School. After the second world war, he trained as a teacher, specializing first in Physical Education and subsequently in English and remedial work.
