General grapples with nation in chaos
Article Abstract:
The priority issues for new Nigerian military ruler General Abdulsalam Abubakar will be political prisoners and plans to restore constitutional government. He will have to overcome apparent divisions within the military about the role it should play in politics, and will have to gain the support of the Hausa-Fulani majority if he is to rule effectively. The most difficult problem for the new administration will be what to do with General Abacha's programme to restore civilian rule.

Colonial legacy may split Cameroon
Article Abstract:
Moves by the Southern Cameroons Nuclear Congress (SCNC) to gain independence for the south of the country, a former British colony, will cause considerable problems for Cameroon's French-speaking government. The government claims that there are no longer any problems with splits between French speakers and English speakers, but this is clearly not the case. The situation is becoming particularly sensitive as Cameroon seeks to become the 52nd member of the Commonwealth.
