So you want a career in television, do you?
Article Abstract:
Media studies graduates seeking employment in production and post-production must decide exactly where their interests and talents lie, as this is a very competitive sector. This is reflected in the fact that ft2, the only national provider of new entrant training in junior technical, construction and production grades for the television industry, sent out 2,500 application packs in 1997. It eventually took on only six trainees. A further four places were sponsored by Channel 4 for employees from its ethnic minorities recruitment programme.

A plea to my new director-general: save foreign news
Article Abstract:
The future of BBC World seems uncertain. Financial pressures mean that the staff of 50 in the newsroom will probably be reduced by 19, and the entire service could be taken over by BBC News 24. It is to be hoped that new BBC Director-General Greg Dyke will give immediate attention to protecting BBC World, which broadcasts to 145 million homes across the world, along with many hotel rooms. BBC World operates on a very limited budget, but has gained great respect for the depth of its coverage.
