For better or for worse
Article Abstract:
Potential university students in Britain receive the results of their school examinations in Aug, and may not have achieved the grades they need to go to their university of choice. The university may still accept them, despite the lower grades, but they need to decide promptly because the offer may otherwise be withdrawn. There is also a scheme called clearing which allows universities that have vacancies to seek students needing places. Students can also retake their examinations, though this is difficult. Universities also favor students who have spent a year gaining experience of life and work between school and university.

Cool London is the big draw
Article Abstract:
Many young people choose to study in London, England, even though it is expensive to live there. They are attracted by London's status as a cultural centre and by the fact that the city will offer many employment opportunities when they have completed their studies. Proximity to London also attracts young people to higher education institutions in south-east England. Students at these institutions enjoy both a provincial atmosphere and ease of access to London.

Invasion of the student snatchers
Article Abstract:
US colleges are beginning to establish a presence in Europe. UK universities are aware that US colleges could become a source of competition for students, and the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals has commissioned Professor Robin Middlehurst of Surrey University to investigate how they should react to international competition. Traditional universities are particularly concerned about losing MBA students, who provide valuable income.
