A qualified success
Article Abstract:
The number of students taking General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) courses in the UK is rising. However, there are still mixed views about whether the GNVQ has achieved its goals, including improving standards of technical and vocational education and preparing young people for work. There are now 15 GNVQ subjects available, but three-quarters of students taking the qualification are focusing on health and social care, business, leisure and tourism and art and design. In contrast, few young people are being attracted to GNVQ courses in scientific and technological areas.

Applications up
Article Abstract:
The UK Teacher Training Agency reports that 670 more graduates have applied for primary teacher training places in 1999 than in 1998, with 260 more applying for secondary post-graduate certificate in education courses. There has been a particular rise in applications for training in subjects where there is a shortage of teachers, including mathematics, music and science. Television advertising is believed to have had a significant impact on student-teacher recruitment.
