Bill is the talk of Davos - not just his troubles, but his economy
Article Abstract:
The success of the US economic model was a key theme at the 1998 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Many speakers claimed that the financial crisis in the Far East can be interpreted as the final triumph of Anglo-Saxon capitalism. However, it is possible to argue that the crisis in the Far East has highlighted the weaknesses of unregulated Western capitalism just as much as the disadvantages of the Asian economic model. Indeed, the Far Eastern crisis can be seen as a crisis of global capitalism.

Why not allow Korea to go to the wall?
Article Abstract:
It is hard to understand the reasons behind the international community's decision to put together a $55 billion aid package for South Korea. Some observers believe that South Korea should have been left to fend for itself, especially as South Korean companies are already receiving many incentives to set up operations in Europe. However, this approach would not have been in the best interests of the world economy. Indeed, it could even have sparked off a deflationary spiral.

Is there gain in the City's euro pain?
Article Abstract:
The UK financial services industry has made extensive preparations for the introduction of the single European currency. This has been particularly true among investment and commercial banks. Financial services institutions are very strongly aware that it is vital to handle the shift to the single European currency appropriately if they are to remain competitive. It is still very difficult to predict exactly what the impact of the single European currency will be.
