Birt begins the BBC break-up
Article Abstract:
BBC Resources, the largest directorate of the BBC, is set to be spun off as the first stage in the privatisation of large parts of the BBC's activities. The plan, which is said to have the support of BBC director-general John Birt, will certainly be controversial, especially in relation to the BBC's future role as a public service broadcaster. The facilities and studios controlled by BBC Resources produce sales of more than 700 million pounds sterling a year and employ around 9,000 people.

Three lock horns in battle of the TV titans
Article Abstract:
News Corp, headed by Rupert Murdoch, is competing strongly with Sumner Redstone's Viacom and Ted Turner's Turner Entertainments for global dominance of television broadcasting. All three companies now have a strong distribution network, each has secured programming and each owns or uses cable and satellite vehicles. They are hoping to benefit from the deregulation of broadcasting and from the continued expansion of the market.
