Bitter crop that dulls the pain of a life in exile
Article Abstract:
Qat is chewed in north and east Africa and the Middle East, and the effect is similar to that of alcohol without the loss of control. It is not illegal in the UK where it was introduced by the Somali refugees. Recently it has caused much controversy in the Somali community, their women wanting it outlawed because it has adverse effects both on the community's integration and the men's desire to work. There are over 15,000 Somalis in the UK, mostly in London. It was almost made illegal in Somalia but the civil war intervened with the legislation.

Buddhist monks seek solace in a retreat from the modern world
Article Abstract:
A group of Tibetan Buddhist monks spent four years in retreat at Samye Ling, the largest Tibetan centre in Europe, at Eskdalemuir, near Lockerbie, Scotland. They had no radio, television or newspapers. They meditated in wooden boxes. There is a magnificent temple built by donations and a library to house sacred texts is planned. There are hundreds of Buddhists in the area. The centre bought Holy Island, off the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde, for a Buddhist retreat and a multi-faith retreat.
