Blair offers failsafe deal to Trimble
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is willing to meet some of the Ulster Unionists' calls for a more fair fall back position if republicans fail to adhere to the recently proposed peace deal for Northern Ireland by beginning to decommission their weapons. It is vital to the UK government's plans that the Ulster Unionists come to accept the peace deal. Government ministers recognize that the proposed deal currently gives the impression that Unionists would be punished if the IRA did not disarm, as the assembly and executive would be suspended.

At last, Mr Trimble has a Big Idea to sell to Ulster
Article Abstract:
Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has been trying for some time to find a policy that will eliminate the traditional image of Ulster Unionism as defensive and negative. He seems to believe that he has now found this policy in the form of a partnership with nationalists, as long as they reject violence and are seen to be committed to peaceful means. Presenting Unionism in a more constructive light is certainly a wise electoral tactic, but it is a risky move, as Unionism is currently confused and fragmented.
