Blair dismisses 'rag-bag ideas to save Tories.' (Labour party leader Tony Blair dismisses Queen's Speech)
Article Abstract:
The measures contained in the Queen's Speech are simply an attempt to secure the future of the Conservative government, and have no relevance to the interests of ordinary people, according to Labour party leader Tony Blair. Prime minister John Major has responded by stating that the legislative programme set down in the speech is the right one for the UK, and that it will also provide an insight into the true extent of support for the Labour party. Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown believes that the forthcoming Budget will be more significant than the Queen's Speech.

Blair lacks courage, says Ashdown
Article Abstract:
Paddy Ashdown, who is stepping down as leader of the UK Liberal Democrats in summer 1999, believes that his party must retain its links with the Labour party if it is to remain influential. He has criticized the government for a lack of vision, and has condemned Prime Minister Tony Blair for being under the influence of media barons. He feels that the Labour party makes minor changes but hesitates to be really radical in important areas.
