Blair offers a fresh start for Irish peace
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is attempting to re-start the peace process in Northern Ireland. He has emphasized that Northern Ireland will remain united with the rest of the UK, but has stated a wish to see a strong Irish dimension to the union. Direct contact has been made with Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams by Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Mo Mowlam, and Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness has confirmed that Sinn Fein will be taking up the offer of negotiations. Blair's initiative has been welcomed both by the Social Democratic and Labour party and the Ulster Unionists.

Blair sets Ulster its biggest test
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has demonstrated his determination to make progress towards peace in Northern Ireland, even if the forthcoming gathering of the Orange order in Drumcree, Northern Ireland, brings bitter conflict. He has managed to seize the moral high ground, and this has put pressure on both unionists and republicans. It is now planned that peace talks will begin in mid-Sep 1997, with Sinn Fein being permitted to participate six weeks after an IRA ceasefire. The sincerity of Sinn Fein leaders will be under extensive scrutiny in the run-up to the talks.
