Parties to target individuals in mailing campaign
Article Abstract:
Political parties are preparing personalised letters using junk mail techniques of very specific targeting. Previously election leaflets went to committed supporters and dedicated opponents and had to cover all topics. Software programmes for cheap computers enable relevant letters to be sent. Information such as age and ethnic background can be gathered from the electrol roll. The Office of Data Protection Registrar has become concerned about direct mail firms files of information and contacted marketing companies but no action will be taken till after the election.

Flood of information may prove deceptive
Article Abstract:
Audit Commission performance indicators will show how efficient local authorities, police and fire services are by the end of 1994. Citizens will be able to compare their council with others in 152 services. However, these statistics will not cover local needs. The Association of Metropolitan Authorities found the indicators too simplistic. They could not measure quality. Councils could manipulate the figures.
