History in costly fairy-tale garb
Article Abstract:
The National Trust, which is currently celebrating its centenary, has been extremely successful, but there are still some negative aspects about the way in which it is run. It now seems to focus exclusively on retaining the riches which it has already gained, and is unwilling to become involved in controversial issues for fear of alienating its supporters. Its houses are extremely expensive to run, which means that the areas of countryside controlled by the National Trust often receive less investment.
