Booming business among Amsterdam's red lights
Article Abstract:
In Holland prostitution and call girl agencies are not against the law, although brothels are theoretically illegal. Amsterdam's municipal authority controls brothels, permitting 200 within a limited area. The Dutch parliament is planning legislation in summer 1992 to formally legalise brothels which will include rules on size of bedrooms, fire precautions, safe sex policies, ventilation and sanitation requirements. The company Amsterdam Call Girls is registered with the municipal authorities and has a loan from the Gemeentelijke Kredietbank, the first official loan to a prostitution business from a mainstream Dutch bank.

Reform goes out of the window
Article Abstract:
The UK government's decision to privatise the prison service is incompatible with the prison reforms recommended by Lord Justice Woolf in 1990. The Woolf report recommends better prison conditions, less overcrowding and 'community prisons'. The government has set up a market testing unit that has a budget of 1.6 million pounds sterling to compare tenders. Existing prison teams will have to compete against franchises. This puts pressure on staff and goes against reform implementation. Critics believe that privatisation will commercialise prisons and will result in longer prison sentences.

Governor does his duty despite islanders' anger
Article Abstract:
Vernon Tomes, second-highest ranked official in the island of Jersey, was sacked by the British Home Office but 1,000 islanders protested when His Excellency Air Marshal Sir John Sutton KCB, Her Majesty's Lieutenant-Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Jersey gave his explanation. The 61-year old lawyer and Deputy Bailiff had taken too long to produce case judgements but the islanders demonstrated support for him and hatred of mainland interference in dependency affairs.
