Breaking up is hard to do for Korea's conglomerates
Article Abstract:
Financial analysts and investors regard the break-up of South Korea's chaebol, or family-owned conglomerates, as vital to the last phase of the re-engineering of the country's economy. They are looking very closely at the extent to which the South Korean government will force the chaebol to sell off their assets. The financial markets have responded positively to the decision to force Daewoo, the country's second-largest chaebol, to sell all but six units, but will react negatively to any signs of going back on plans to reorganize other chaebol.
