BritArt's big day out
Article Abstract:
There was very strong interest in the sale by Charles Saatchi of 130 works by 97 artists from his collection. Many of those who attended the sale were keen to see whether these works, many of which are on the cutting edge of modern art, would attract genuine purchasers. A work by Sarah Lucas entitled 'Seven Up' fetched more than twice the top estimate, while 'Prop,' a work by Jenny Saville, who has never sold outside the Saatchi collection before, sold for 51,000 pounds sterling, compared with the top estimate of 15,000 pounds sterling.

New Labour's old enemies are back
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and his press secretary Alastair Campbell have worked very hard to gain favour among Conservative columnists and newspapers. However, sources close to Blair indicate that he does not believe that he has been benefiting from positive media coverage. The right-wing press is now beginning to distance itself from the Labour party, as reflected in a direct confrontation between Blair and Daily Mail Editor Paul Dacre after Blair's speech to the 1999 Labour party conference.

Shakespeare meets Busby Berkeley
Article Abstract:
Kenneth Branagh is directing and starring in a new film version of William Shakespeare's 'Love's Labour's Lost.' The original text has been supplemented with 1930s song-and-dance numbers, and this will be the first film musical to have been made in the UK since 'Absolute Beginners' in the mid-1980s. Film producer Harvey Weinstein has been very attracted to the idea of a Shakespeare musical, and has agreed to distribute the film in the US.
