British bobby takes the heat out of explosive situation
Article Abstract:
Some residents of the island of Montserrat, which is under threat of being engulfed by the Soufriere Hills volcano, have expressed opposition to the evacuation compensation package offered by the UK government. They believe that the package is inadequate, and are unwilling to leave the island, especially as volcanic activity seems to have died down slightly. Local government Chief Minister Bertrand Osborne has resigned, and it seems possible that the UK may take full control in order to organize the evacuation.

An eruption, an eviction, an industry
Article Abstract:
A volcano has erupted in Montserrat and engulfed the capital, Plymouth. Part of the population has fled north, and the village of Salem is growing rapidly due to the evacuation of Plymouth. The island was colonised in the 17th century by Irishmen banished by Cromwell, and Irish traditions persist. The volcano has left some farmland undisturbed and there is still fresh water from Central Hills. Critics argue that the British government has not done enough to help the island, while Canada has provided more aid.
