Brown: get ready for the euro
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom chancellor, Gordon Brown, has stated the the ruling Labor party supports joining European monetary union (Emu) in principle. Preparations will be started after the next UK election from 1997. The opposition Conservative party is divided on this issue, with some Conservatives, such as Kenneth Clarke, seeking to join Emu without delay, and others not wishing to join at all. Brown argues that the UK is not ready to form part of Emu in 1999 when the initial members start the project.

Staying in, or dropping out? Major sows confusion over Europe
Article Abstract:
UK prime minister John Major is currently issuing very mixed signals about the country's future in the European Union. He has stated that the UK will not withdraw from the European Union, but has also expressed the view that a wrong decision on the single European currency could have a serious impact on continued membership. Some Euro-sceptic observers have seized on this comment, interpreting it as threat that the UK would considering withdrawing from the European Union.
