Brown promises a job for everyone
Article Abstract:
The UK government aims to implement full employment in the 21st century, according to Chancellor Gordon Brown. He believes that making a commitment to a full employment policy signals that the government has a new self-confidence. In a speech to the Labour party's 1997 annual conference in Brighton, England, he will state that no government can guarantee that everyone will stay in the same job. However, the government will make every effort to guarantee opportunities for people to move into new employment.

Editor's claim undermines attack on paper
Article Abstract:
Kevin MacKenzie, editor of 'The Sun' newspaper, stated on a Radio 4 broadcast that a Cabinet minister had given him information about Mr Paddy Ashdown's love affairs during the election campaign. Conservative election tactics allegedly included a smear campaign if competition were close. Liberal Democrats were aware of the plan but felt the story would not be printed by a British newspaper because it was untrue. In 1987 a similar allegation was made to damage Sir David Steel's election support.
