Article Abstract:

Japan is entering the space race and is proving to be a commercial rival to the US although it has the twin obstacles of cash and geographic location. On Feb 03 92 Japan launched its First Earth Resources Satellite powered partly by a US rocket and partly by a new LE-5 Japanese rocket which is exciting US interest. Japan has clashed with the US over its share of the commercial space market, but it is likely that they will work together in the future. Japan's main obstacles are lack of government cash and suitable launch sites.

A forthcoming mission aboard the space shuttle 'Endeavour' will focus on testing modifications to the clothing which is vital to protecting astronauts when they undertake space walks. With the end of the Cold War, spacesuit designers from Russia and the US have been able to join forces and compare design ideas. It has proved extremely hard to create the perfect suit, and many improvements will have to be made before the final assembly of the Alpha international space station can be undertaken.

Article Abstract:

Scientists may be able to see comets which have never been seen before as a result of new photographs being taken by the Hubble space telescope (HST). It is likely that information obtained from the HST will lead to completely new views on the structure of the solar system. Already, extremely clear pictures of Pluto, the smallest planet in the solar system, and Charon, its moon, have been obtained.
