Arafat's election stirs passions of Palestinians
Article Abstract:
There has been a positive reaction in Palestine to moves to elect an 88-member Palestinian Council. There are 700 candidates in the election, which is to be held on Jan 20, 1996. Most Palestinians regard this as a step towards building their own state, although the election is being boycotted by the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP). This party points out that Palestinians will still have complete control of only 3% of the West Bank.

Arafat murder was foiled by Malta killing
Article Abstract:
Iranian intelligence information indicates that Fathi Shkaki, leader of the militant Palestinian Islamic Jihad organisation, was murdered in Oct 1995 on instructions from Israel. It is believed that he was plotting with Iran to assassinate PLO chairman Yasser Arafat. The PLO chairman was a key target for Islamic Jihad and Israel because he was cooperating with Israel and the US in signing the Oslo peace agreements.
