By Europe's standards, a quiet affair
Article Abstract:
There has been little real emotion among Scots about the prospect of Scotland breaking away from the UK. The campaigning in the run-up to the referendum on an independent Scottish parliament has attracted only limited attention, and the only point of real debate was the intervention of former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher. Her attitude probably did a lot more than could have been achieved by pro-independence campaigners to encourage undecided voters to vote in favour of an independent Scottish parliament. The attitude of Scots contrasts sharply with the great excitement with which the prospect of independence was met in former Soviet bloc countries.

Dresden extends its olive branch to royalty
Article Abstract:
The bombing of Dresden, Germany, in Feb 1945, which killed at least 35, 000 people, has always been remembered with great bitterness by the city's inhabitants, who were not at all welcoming to the Queen when she visited in 1992. However, this now seems to be being replaced with a determination to look to the future, and the Duke of Kent will not be treated so harshly when he attends ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the bombing. The city is working towards reconciliation, and all demonstrations which are likely to be violent have been banned.

Curtain lifts on Buchenwald 'Gulag.' (many deaths at secret KGB camp at Buchenwald after second world war)
Article Abstract:
Evidence is starting to emerge that the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald was replaced by a Soviet camp run by the KGB almost immediately after the end of the second world war. Here, 28,000 people were imprisoned in 1945-1950, and at least 7,000 died. The authorities have hesitated for many years about how to deal with the history of this site, but have now decided to build a new museum which will officially acknowledge its existence for the first time.
