Call this green and pleasant land?
Article Abstract:
Extensive changes in agricultural methods in the UK over recent years have had a very negative impact on wildlife. Some 24 out of 28 farmland bird species are in decline, for example, and large areas of natural lowland grasslands have been lost. The most from sowing cereal crops in the spring to sowing them in autumn and the growing use of insecticide sprays have been key trends which have affected farmland birds. This situation will only improve if the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is reformed to encourage farmers to reduce the intensity of their operations.

Where have all the woodlands gone?
Article Abstract:
There are now only around 300,000 ha of natural broadleaved woodlands in Great Britain, accounting for only 1% of the land area. A further 2% is covered with planted broadleaved woods, with the total wooded area rising to 10% if planted conifers are taken into account. During the course of the 20th century, 46 woodland species, mainly invertebrates and plants, have become extinct, and a further 78 are declining very quickly. There are now a number of initiatives designed to reverse many years of over-use of woods.

Where have all the nurses gone?
Article Abstract:
The number of nursing students in UK has fallen by 39% over the last eight years, and the country is now facing a serious shortage of nurses at a time when demand is rising sharply. The UK government initially denied that a shortage of nurses existed at all, but then reacted by reinstating some of the lost training places for nurses. Most recently, problems have been caused by the introduction of a system of local pay, under which nurses are forced to negotiate with their managers.
