Is this just a killing field?
Article Abstract:
There would be serious repercussions if a total ban on hunting with hounds were to be introduced in the UK. Hunting dogs are not domesticated, so packs could not simply be broken up and the dogs taken on as pets. It would be necessary to put down 15,000 hunting dogs, and this would cause considerable controversy. Similarly, there would also be a large surplus of horses and ponies currently used for hunting. Dispersing packs of hunting dogs would cause serious problems for farmers who rely on being able to dispose of dead animals by having them collected by hunt kennels.

Look back in anger - and joy
Article Abstract:
Those involved in rural life in the UK faced a number of significant challenges in 1998. A rally in London, England, in Mar 1998 attended by almost 300,000 people raised the key issues relating to the countryside, but still none of these have been resolved. It is clear that most ordinary people do not favour fox hunting, but this is not a reason to ban it, as the views of people who live in urban areas should not necessarily be imposed on those who live in the countryside. Local councils continue to allow green land to be taken over by developers.

Who's eating all the fish?
Article Abstract:
Sea lice have been attacking sea trout in Ireland and salmon in Scotland. The lice eat the fish alive when they migrate to the sea. Some attempt to return to fresh water where the lice cannot survive, but the fish have too little food there. The problem has been linked to infested salmon farms, and Irish fishery owners are taking legal action to prevent pollution of estuaries. The Norwegian solution is to ban the siting of farms in a 20 km radius of rivers where wild fish live.
