The wild, haunting scenery of early life
Article Abstract:
Per Olov Enquist, born in 1934 in Vasterbotten, Norrland, Sweden, an unsophisticated community which produced people with religious natures, became a novelist and life-long member of the Social Democrats. He enjoys commenting on current affairs, which he feels is his duty. Living in Copenhagen, he approves of Scandinavian society and voted against the Maastricht treaty. His latest novel, 'Captain Nemo's Library', is set in a Vasterbotten community where two babies are confused in the hospital and spend their first six years in the wrong family. It demonstrates his awareness of human nature and symbolises insecurity and homelessness.

Still on track - or about to shunt into the sidings?
Article Abstract:
Author Irvine Welsh, who first came to public attention in 1993 with the novel 'Trainspotting,' has seen his work converted into many different forms. Fame has not changed his approach to writing, and his more recent works are largely along the same lines as 'Trainspotting.' It is difficult to tell what the future will hold for Welsh, who remains indifferent to a conventional literary career. It is possible that he will take a break from fiction and become involved in some sort of business venture.

Writing with the other hand
Article Abstract:
There have been many examples of people associated closely with a particular literary style having at some stage attempted to break into other areas. This indicates that they initially have a general creativity which is channelled into a particular area by the forces which exist at that time. Some writers have been extremely successful in moving into a different genre, and have in this way shed new light on a creativity with which readers believed they were very familiar.
