Can it be wrong to 'black up' for Othello?
Article Abstract:
The Shakespearean play 'Othello' tends to be avoided by the National Theater and Royal Shakespeare Company in the United Kingdom, because there is a reluctance to use a white actor for the role. The are not enough well-known black actors to play the part, so the play is avoided for reasons of political correctness. Theater involves pretense. Women play men's roles, and white men have played that part of Othello for 400 years. There is a need for more black actors to have enough experience to play the role, but it should also be available to white actors.

RSC plan to demolish Stratford
Article Abstract:
The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) plans to demolish its theater in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, replacing it with a new building. The RSC has requested lottery money to help fund this project. The theater seats 1,500 people, and directors often prefer a neighboring, smaller theater built in the Elizabethan style. The planned theater will have better river access, and more space for information, performances and meeting rooms. Work is unlikely to start on the new theater before 2000.

Musicals turning drama into a crisis, say producers
Article Abstract:
Playwrights and theatre producers believe that the quality of drama in the UK could be negatively affected by the fact that musicals are now becoming dominant in the West End of London, England. There are currently 19 musicals playing in the West End, with around 12 more expected in the near future. There is particular concern that some musicals are running for only a very short time, apparently indicating that their quality is not very high.
