American oil giants block efforts to end global warming
Article Abstract:
Extensive lobbying activity is being undertaken by US industry, especially oil and energy multinationals, against large cuts in emissions caused by the burning of fossil fuels. The US believes that developed countries should be permitted to make part of their contribution to reducing emissions in the form of helping developing countries to control the rise in their emissions. This view is not entirely shared by the European Union, which has made a firm commitment to reducing its emissions by 10% between 2000 and 2010.

Three days to save the world: global warning summit on brink of failure
Article Abstract:
The world summit on pollution which is currently taking place in Kyoto, Japan, looks set for failure. The European Union will almost certainly not be able to force developed countries to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases by 15% by 2010, and it is likely that the final agreed target will be between 0% and 10%. There has proved to be insufficient time to reach agreement on a range of important issues, including the trading by rich countries of allowances to produce greenhouse gases.

America reveals her policy on global warming: too little, too late
Article Abstract:
The UK and the European Union believe that the commitment made by the US to reducing its emissions of gases which cause global warming to 1990 levels by around 2010 is not adequate. They feel that the US, as the world's largest polluter, should be doing much more to combat global warming. The US will bring a proposal to the United Nations climate summit in Kyoto, Japan, in Dec 1997 that developed countries should collectively cut their emissions to 1990 levels by between 2008 and 2012.
